Blog/Opinion: Water from the Air?

By HHI Staff

There are now water processing devices (aka, atmospheric water generators) that enable capturing and purifying drinking water from moisture in the air.

One of the apparent industry leaders is Atmospheric Water Systems, Inc. , and they offer two models for consumers: the DK11 countertop unit ($1,695.00) and the DH10 ($1,999.00). According to the manufacturer, both units are on backorder because demand has outpaced supply (as of May 15th 2012).

Both the DK11 and the DH10 create drinking water by cooling and condensing moisture in the air and collecting it in a reservoir. Both units filter the collected water to render it very fit for drinking. Don't buy one of these if your local relative humidity is much below 30 percent, since the units will not work in very dry climates.

Under the right conditions (say Hawaii or Florida), the DK11 produces 17 liters of water per day and uses 330 watts running on 110 volts, while theDH10 produces up to 28 liters per day using 380 watts and running on 110 or 220. Alternative power sources are encouraged (e.g., solar). All necessary filters plus a replacement filter kit are included standard with the units, and the manufacturer claims the DK11 and the DH10 should not need additional filter replacement or other maintenance during the first few years; however, the filter kit will need replenishing in time, and it currently retails for about $145. A one-year parts & 90 day labor warranty are standard.
