Jeff May’s Healthy Home Tips book can help you ensure your home is clean and healthy. He simplifies complicated topics without oversimplifying. Regarding relative humidity, Jeff explains:

Relative humidity (RH) is a measure of how much water vapor air at a given temperature is holding, versus how much water vapor that air at the same temperature can hold. If air is at 60% relative humidity, it has 40% more capacity to hold water vapor until it reaches the saturation point (100% RH), when moisture begins to condense on cooler surfaces. Cooler air has a reduced capacity to hold water vapor. If we take that air with 60% RH and cool it, the RH will rise even though we are not introducing more water vapor into the air.”

“Air does not always have the same temperature throughout an indoor space. Air next to cool basement walls or near the slab (the concrete foundation floor) is usually cooler than air at eye level in the middle of the basement. This cooler air has a higher relative humidity. As the RH rises above 80%, some molds can grow on surface dust as well as on dust captured in carpeting and fiberglass insulation.”
