Hindsight is 20/20. That’s a phrase many of us have heard before, but in remodeling, it couldn’t be more true. People often get caught up in the appearance aspect of remodeling and forget about the long term costs including, importantly, energy efficiency and other factors, such as health.

It's an easy mistake. Television "design shows" rarely address the details that help ensure the home is comfortable, healthy, and affordable to maintain. Perhaps, they don't want to bore the audience, but the "details" of remodeling can actually be quite interesting and even exciting.

The book, No Regrets Remodeling, helps with this latter aspect.

No Regrets Remodeling provides some great ideas. While its layout is designed for fast and easy referencing, we recommend reading the whole book as it is packed with informative material. For example, who knew there were so many different kinds of windows and window glazes? Knowing what kinds there are and which are best suited for each location can help empower you as buyer to find quality windows that best suit your home and your budget.

Windows are just one example. This 17-chapter book also addresses the topics of insulation, air sealing, lighting, ventilation, heating, cooling, water, and more.

Even if remodeling is not in your plans, the guidelines in this book can help you make small, budget-friendly improvements to the energy-efficiency and other aspects of your home without any major overhauls, and you can even do some improvements yourself.

It can also alert you to construction problems that may affect the healthfulness and energy-efficiency of your home.

If something breaks and needs replacing, you can choose the best techniques and products to repair or replace it using the tips in this book.

If you're imagining making a better home, stop first and do your research. Doing so can lead to a "No-Regrets Remodeling" experience.
