Restoraction Limited (Ltd) - a UK-based service provider - is profiled below.

1. How important is it to "clean for health"?

Crucially so – pretty much everything we do in fire, flood and general damage restoration, and in rug, carpet and upholstery cleaning, impacts the health of our clients, employees and members of the public.

2. What type of education or training do your technicians receive to help ensure their effectiveness in this regard?

All our technicians are qualified at various IICRC www.iicrc.org levels, such as Applied Structural Drying, Water Damage, Hard Floor Restoration, Fire and Smoke Restoration, & Odor Control.

The IICRC - an ANSI-accredited standard-development organization - has led the way in establishing international standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, upholstery and fabric cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation.

We also support and are involved with UK-based accreditation bodies such as the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) - http://www.ncca.co.uk - a respected trade association for the cleaning of carpets, hard flooring and soft furnishings.

We have a British Damage Management Association (BDMA)-qualified - http://www.bdma.org.uk/ - technician on staff. BDMA, in addition to providing and qualifying restoration expertise, works at relations between the insurance industry and those who provide recovery and restoration services.

The principal of Restoraction Ltd. is a Technical Consultant for the National Flood School www.nationalfloodschool.co.uk - which supports fire and flood restoration standards and best practice in the UK. Based in Farnham, Surrey, the National Flood School has Europe's only known 'flood house' - a property regularly flooded with 1,800 gallons (7,000 litres) of water during hands-on training courses approved by the IICRC. Restoraction Limited is an approved operator of the National Flood School.

Lastly, we regularly attend specialist courses on health-related issues such as asbestos awareness.

3. Which tasks or activities do you perform that are most important to your customers in protecting health?

In carrying out any cleaning or restoration task, one of our main priorities is not to make the matter worse, hence, as part of our risk assessment and introductory meeting with clients we ascertain, for example, whether anyone in the household has a medical condition which could be affected by the incident or by our works, and we explain potential risks such as trip hazards or electric shock and how we can work with them to eliminate or minimize the risk.

Moreover, all of our efforts support a more hygienic home and business environment by thorough removal of dust, soil, mites and bacteria, lowering the risk of allergies, mold, and related health or structural problems.

4. How is IICRC certification important in ensuring and validating technical proficiency in these matters?

Principally, IICRC’s comprehensive training and documentation helps to ensure and validate the qualifications of our technicians; but also the ongoing encouragement, education and monitoring provided by IICRC helps ensure we stay updated and aware of new developments.

5. What is the biggest challenge you face, how are you meeting it, and what prescription would you offer others dealing with similar obstacles?

Not having enough hours in the day! As business owners we owe it to family and colleagues to maintain a good ‘work/life balance’ as much as possible despite the pressures. It’s good to know that fellow IICRC members can and do offer kind words of encouragement, provide technical advice, or practical help as and when needed - it helps!

6. How should people get in touch with you?
