Questions forAMS Carpet Cleaning, LLC– Eric W Sapp, Owner

1. Given your focus to make customers’ homes cleaner, healthier and happier, how important is it to "clean for health"?

It is extremely important to clean for health. We only use products that are safe for our customer and the worker, since we use these products multiple times a day and would not want to be exposed, or to expose others, to something unsafe. Our website tag line is, "Dedicated to making the world a cleaner, happier, healthier place - and it shows!" Properly maintained carpet traps contaminants - mold, dust, allergens, bacteria, and dust mites - like an air filter, and we believe in keeping it clean. We also offer an allergen treatment to every customer because everyone deserves a healthy home.

2. What type of education or training do your technicians receive to help ensure their effectiveness in this regard?

As the owner/operator of AMS Carpet Cleaning, LLC, I am the sole technician, strongly believe in IICRC certification, and will not perform any task without first properly educating myself through the IICRC. I would never want to ruin someone's property or cause other issues, simply because I did not take the time to know what I was doing in a safe and effective manner.

As the business grows and we begin to take on other technicians we will require them to become IICRC-certified to ensure they are knowledgeable about the craft of healthful cleaning.

3. Which tasks or activities do you perform that are most important to your customers in protecting health?

We use green cleaning products that do not contain VOCs or solvents such as Butyl Cellusolve. We insist on keeping chemical selection, and use, as healthy and safe as possible, to help ensure a healthier environment. The means following all IICRC guidelines for proper cleaning, including step-by-step vacuuming, pre-spray, agitation, extracting, and post-clean grooming. By following the steps outlined by the IICRC, we believe we can remove as much unhealthful matter as possible, ensuring customers a healthier indoors.

4. How is IICRC certification important in ensuring and validating technical proficiency in these matters?

The IICRC provides educational and safety guidelines second to none. It is important to be knowledgeable, so we can safely and effectively clean for our customers. The IICRC is an excellent source for learning about new techniques, cleaning processes, and equipment to keep our carpet and upholstery cleaning business up to date with the newest techniques and technology. The more we know about our craft, the more effective we will be. IICRC helps enormously here.

5. What is the biggest challenge you face, how are you meeting it, and what prescription would you offer others dealing with similar obstacles?

Too few customers know and understand the importance of hiring an IICRC-certified cleaner. It is a shame, really. Many times, we only hear about bad carpet cleaners, and their unethical tactics. Dedicated IICRC-certified professionals would never act this way.

We care about our craft, our customers, and our reputations. We strive to make the world a healthier place, but sometimes the customer does not know how to select qualified help rather than unskilled “hobbyists".

Many people do not know the IICRC represents a collective group of hard-working professionals who take their jobs seriously. The IICRC does a comprehensive job educating professionals, and we all need to, in turn, educate the public more effectively.

Consumers should know to look for the IICRC-certification or the cleantrust designation, and be well acquainted with the quality of work they should expect from an IICRC-certified technician.  This would help take the worry out of their search, and get them the best results for their money.

As the educated professionals we are, we need to educate our customers about the non-profit IICRC and the benefits it brings them in environments that are more healthful.
